A couple months ago I got to photograph Emsley and her 87 year old grandfather get matching tattoos. During my time with both of them and her dad I got to hear about how Emsley became the namesake of her larger than life granddad. Her dad told me, “she was the first grandchild and we bounced around the idea of giving them a family name, whether a boy or a girl. I told Dad that if it was a girl we may name her after him, Emsley Clair (his name is Sinclair Emsley). He was a minister, so that next Sunday he stood at the pulpit and told the whole congregation his first grandchild was going to be named after him, so we had no choice but to lock it in and that’s how Emsley got her name.” 27 years later they took turns sitting in a tattoo chair in the middle of Greer getting E1 + E2 (nicknames that her Granddad gave them) in the other’s handwriting. Dr. Lewis is the coolest granddad I know and Emsley and him have the sweetest relationship that left me missing the heck out of my granddaddy and also kinda left me wanting to get “E3” tattooed on my arm just so I could be a part of their club. This is super long-winded, but this session was so special to me and reminded me of how important and precious not only moments are, but relationships too and I’m really thankful I get to be in the business of both!
